Nominees for the “German Peace Prize for Photography” have been announced.
Five photographers selected for the first ever photo prize.
The jury for the international “German Peace Prize for Photography” has determined the narrower range of favorites for the first competition. The award ceremony will take place on 19 October 2019 in Osnabrück. The five works will be on display in their own exhibition from October 20, 2019, in the Museumsquartier Osnabrück.
The initiators of the photo prize for professional photographers are the city of Osnabrück and the locally based, globally operating company Felix Schoeller Group. As part of the internationally renowned Felix Schoeller Photo Award, professional photographers from all over the world were able to submit their work in the special category “German Peace Prize for Photography”. 41 works by photographers from 20 countries reached the shortlist, from which the jury selected the five nominees. The nominees come from Sweden, France and Germany. From the five works, the first winner of this competition will be announced on 19 October 2019 in a solemn ceremony. The speaker will be the Director of the Ethics Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva, Helmut Buss.
“The jury did not make it easy for themselves. The topic of peace also required a very intensive thematic examination of the works. The members of the completely independent jury know neither the name nor the origin of the photographers and judge the work of the photographers solely on the basis of the present work and the written concept“, explains Michael Dannenmann, jury chairman (portrait photographer, DGPh *). The jury included Dannenmann, Clara Maria Sels (gallery owner and director of the Düsseldorf Photo Weekend) and Gérard A. Goodrow (freelance curator and author, lecturer at the CIAM – Center for International Arts Management in Cologne and Düsseldorf) and the two peace researchers. Dana Landau (Swiss Peace Foundation, University of Basel) and Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Schneckener (Professor of International Relations & Peace and Conflict Studies, University of Osnabrück) and Nils-Arne Kässens (Museum Director of the Museumsquartier, Osnabrück). “It was very impressive to see the artistic diversity and the high international level of skill in dealing with the issue of peace,” said Dr. Landau after the jury meeting.
From 20 October 2019 until 8 March 2020, the works of the winner and the nominees will be on display in a separate exhibition entitled “German Peace Prize for Photography 2019” in the Museumsquartier (MQ4) Osnabrück. The motifs are printed in high-quality on Felix Schoeller photo paper and are displayed in large-format.
